UC Davis Opens State-of-the-Art Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery

UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital has unveiled its latest endeavor to advance animal care with the inauguration of the Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery. This standalone facility, strategically located near the main hospital, is poised to revolutionize orthopedic care for animals across the spectrum.

In response to a surge in pet ownership during the pandemic, and a steady increase in caseloads over the past three decades, the Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery was a necessary expansion. Boasting three cutting-edge operating rooms and 25 meticulously designed recovery rooms spread across a spacious 7,300 square feet, the facility sets a new standard for veterinary surgical care.

Goals and Aims

The primary objective of the center is to address the burgeoning backlog of patients while pioneering innovative treatments. Among its notable offerings is the utilization of custom 3D-printed titanium implants for total hip replacements, a procedure that has already proved to be a game-changer for animals like Sky, a Siberian Husky, and Atlas, a cheetah, both of whom underwent successful surgeries at UC Davis.

Training New Specialists

What distinguishes UC Davis as a global leader in veterinary care is not only its expertise in performing such procedures, but also its commitment to training the next generation of specialists. The Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery will serve as an invaluable training ground, offering residency and fellowship programs to aspiring veterinarians eager to specialize in orthopedic surgery.

A Beacon of Excellence

With the addition of a post-residency fellow, six surgical residents, and a dedicated team of nine registered veterinary technicians specializing in orthopedics, UC Davis is poised to set new benchmarks in clinical training. This comprehensive approach ensures their legacy of expertise and innovation is sustained and amplified for generations to come.

The Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery is not merely a standalone initiative; it is an integral component of UC Davis’s broader plan to expand its clinical offerings. This initiative marks the dawn of a new era in veterinary care, reaffirming UC Davis’s position as a beacon of excellence in the field of veterinary medicine.
