ASPCA National Adoption Weekend aims to find homes for horses in need

The ASPCA is inviting animal shelters and rescues, as well as individuals, to participate in National Adoption Weekend from June 5-7, 2020. This nationwide event will help horses and companion animals find homes during COVID-19.

COVID-19 has put equine shelters and rescues under increased pressure due to suspended operations, reduced staff and volunteers and fewer resources – with many relying on the incredible support of foster caregivers to temporarily open their barns to horses both near and far from their communities. Now, these horses are seeking loving homes and many equine welfare organizations nationwide have implemented innovative solutions to help adopters find their match, including remote or socially distanced adoptions, creative social media tactics and online meet-and-greets.

To encourage potential adopters across the country to help meet this need, the ASPCA has launched the ASPCA National Adoption Weekend, a nationwide adoption event taking place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 7, to help more cats, dogs and equines find loving homes during the COVID-19 crisis.

With facilities in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Louisiana, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption, an adoption partner of The ASPCA’s Right Horse Initiative, is just one of many equine welfare organizations taking a unique approach to finding homes for the horses in their care during these challenging times. Potential adopters and horse enthusiasts from across the country have been tuning in to their wildly successful Facebook live meet-and-greets in which they give viewers comprehensive information on a particular horse including their history, health and temperament along with a fun look at them being ridden!

ASPCA research suggests there could be at least 2.3 million adults in the U.S. with the resources and desire to adopt a horse in need, and is encouraging those individuals to get involved in the ASPCA National Adoption Weekend by visiting ASPCA.org/AdoptFromHome to find one of the 572 participating local animal shelter or rescue groups across all 50 states and search for available horses and other animals near them or visit MyRightHorse.org, the ASPCA’s online adoption platform specifically for equines. The ASPCA is asking all animal lovers to share adoptable horses, dogs and cats on their social media channels using the hashtag #AdoptFromHome and #RightHorse.
