Will the practice of betting on Greyhound racing be banned in Florida? Only time will tell.
On Tuesday, November 6th, Floridian voters will have a chance to raise their voices on Amendment 13. As one of the few states left in the USA that allows dog racing, Florida is asking its population to weigh in on whether or not the practice of betting on these races should be banned by 2020. This initiative was put forward by the Florida Constitution Revision Commission and has been supported by both sides of the party divide. After a brief challenge, the Florida State Supreme Court decided in a 6 to 1 vote that it was time to hear what Floridians think about greyhound racing in their state.
Historically, the most important changes to animal rights in America have taken place at the ballot box. It is here where voters can make the simple decision between right and wrong instead of waiting for state legislature to work their way through wording, lobbyists and competing interests. Successful ballot initiatives seen in the past have put limits on everything from puppy mills to the exchange of ivory within American borders.
