Happy 63rd Anniversary, Humane Society!

On November 22nd, 1954, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) opened its doors. In honour of its 63rd Anniversary, here’s a handful of the HSUS’ many noteworthy achievements:

  • In the past 10 years, HSUS has trained more than 8,000 law enforcement officers and helped pass more than 1,000 states laws to change the legal landscape for animals throughout the US.
  • HSUS has made animal cruelty and dogfighting a felony in all 50 states.
  • Along with their affiliates, HSUS cares for more than 300,000 animals each year.
  • HSUS has helped drive down euthanasia rates in shelters and rescue groups by 80% since the 1970s by raising awareness for spay/neuter and adoption.
  • The organization’s direct rescue efforts have saved thousands of dogs from puppy mills across North America.

“Thanks to our members and staff, The HSUS is driving transformational change across so many sectors of the economy – from factory farming to animal testing to wildlife management to fashion and entertainment,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “At the same time, we are the world’s largest provider of hands-on care to animals.”
