Survey Sheds Light on Affinity Toward Pets in Different Generations

Each generation has its own piece of the pet ownership pie.

In a world that’s constantly evolving, one thing remains timeless and heartwarming – the cherished companionship of pets. According to the latest American Pet Products Association (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey for 2023-2024, pets have found a place in the hearts of 66% of households across the United States, totaling a whopping 86.9 million homes. This love for furry, feathered, or scaled friends knows no age limits; it’s a bond that transcends generations.

Gen Z

The youngest generation, Gen Z, is making waves in the pet ownership landscape, representing 16% of current pet owners. As they build their own households, pets have become more than just companions – they are cherished members of their families. Gen Z’s love for pets mirrors their evolving lifestyles and their commitment to providing a loving home for their four-legged friends.

Millennials

Millennials, often hailed for their passion for pets, constitute a significant 33% of pet owners. They are the driving force behind the pet care industry, showing unwavering dedication to the joys and responsibilities of pet parenthood. These pet parents go above and beyond, ensuring that their pets have the very best of everything, from food to toys to healthcare.

Gen X

Generation X, known for their steadfast dedication to pets, makes up 25% of pet owners. This group has consistently provided love and care to their furry friends, maintaining their commitment to their pets over the years. They play an essential role in the world of pet ownership, offering a sense of stability and devotion that pets and their owners deeply appreciate.

Baby Boomers

Once the dominant group of pet owners, baby boomers have seen a gradual decline in their representation. In the 2018-2019 survey, they made up 29% of U.S. pet owners, which decreased to 27% in 2020-2021, and further declined to 24% in the 2023-2024 survey. This shift isn’t just about generational changes; it also reflects the evolving dynamics of American households.

The enduring bond between pets and their owners is a testament to the power of unconditional love. Pets continue to bring joy and companionship to pet owners belonging to different generations.
