Topsy turkey dog treats

It’s National Cookie Day — and just in time for the holidays! Celebrate the season with your canine companion by making him these delicious turkey dog treats.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chicken or turkey “sludge”*
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh Italian or curly parsley
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups whole flour of your choice (e.g., oat, barley, spelt, Red Fife, chickpea, hemp or a combination)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

* Boil the remains of a turkey or chicken carcass and scrape off all remaining meat into the broth. Besides using “sludge” for this recipe, you can also add a little bit to your dog’s food just before serving, for an extra special tasty treat.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350ºF. In a food processor or blender, combine the “sludge” with all the other ingredients until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Turn the dough out onto a floured board or onto parchment paper and knead well — about 12 times.

Let the dough stand for about 10 minutes then roll it out to about ½” thickness, and cut into desired shapes and sizes. You can also form the dough into small balls and pat them down with a fork on a baking sheet, try your hand at making mini pretzels, or roll out in a sheet and score with a knife or pizza cutter.

Bake for 20 minutes, then turn the oven down to 175ºF and bake for 40 more minutes. Turn off oven and allow treats to get bone hard.

When the treats have completely cooled, store them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. They can also be frozen.

Note: For special occasions, remove the treats from the oven after they have been baked 20 minutes. Beat an egg white and glaze the treats, sprinkle with extra Parmesan cheese and a bit of dried parsley or oregano, and return to the oven to finish the baking process. Woof!
